Albania’s telecoms regulator has given the go-ahead for telcos to launch LTE services from 1 September in the 900 MHz and 1800 MHz spectrum bands, but first they are required to carry out tests and report their results.
Earlier this week the Authority of Electronic and Postal Communications (AKEP) instructed Albtelecom, Albanian Mobile Communications (AMC), Vodafone and Plus Communication to begin testing on Wednesday.
The operators will be required to share their results – including data on signalling, modulation and data transfer – by 15 August, the regulator said.
Albania is home to four mobile operators.
Fixed-line incumbent Albtelecom is part of a Çalik Holding-Turk Telekom consortium and owns Eagle Mobile, while AMC is part of the Deutsche Telekom group via its ownership of Greece’s OTE. Vodafone and Plus Communication are also active in the market.
