Auction of 80 MHz of AWS frequencies will begin later this month.
Mexico’s planned auction of AWS spectrum later this month will have two participants, it emerged on Friday: AT&T and America Movil.
The Federal Telecommunications Institute (IFT) announced it has given the go-ahead for both companies to bid in the auction, which is due to begin on 15 February.
The pair were the only companies to file applications to take part in the process late last year.
The country will auction 80 MHz of frequencies in the AWS band, comprising 30 MHz of AWS-1 spectrum (1710-1725 MHz/2110-2125 MHz) and 50 MHz of AWS-3 spectrum (1755-1780 MHz/2155-2180 MHz).
To satisfy the selection criteria, would-be auction participants were required to agree to the rearrangement of existing spectrum to allow for the creation of contiguous frequency blocks, which the regulator said would enable more efficient use of the airwaves for the deployment of LTE.
In addition, AT&T and America Movil met the legal, financial and technical requirements of the auction, as well as satisfying criteria designed to ensure a competitive bidding process, the IFT said.
The auction will use the combinatorial clock format.
