Companies to provide open standards-based tools, starter kit to simplify, accelerate development of new IoT services.

AT&T and IBM this week struck a partnership that will combine the companies’ respective IoT capabilities to offer developers a powerful set of open standards-based tools.

The agreement brings together IBM’s cloud infrastructure and Watson machine learning technology, and AT&T’s various IoT assets, such as its Flow Designer app development tool, its M2X IoT data storage service, its Control Center IoT management platform, and its global network.

"We have heard the call from developers and businesses for more tools to make IoT a reality and together with AT&T, we are bringing together powerful platforms and services to drive collaborative innovation," said Harriet Green, general manager of IBM Watson IoT, commerce and education, on Wednesday.

"This collaboration enables individual developers to tap the power of cognitive computing and combine it with massive amounts of data streaming from billions of connected devices, sensors and systems to create solutions that can help transform businesses and society alike," she said.

To help users get up and running more quickly, AT&T and IBM plan to produce a starter kit containing a complete set of integrated IoT developer tools.

"From farming to fleets, there are many companies that would benefit from real, actionable IoT data," said Chris Penrose, senior vice president of AT&T IoT solutions. "Combining technologies with IBM can advance the developer experience – so they can build comprehensive IoT solutions for businesses."
