U.S. telco says 20% of its contract customers travel north or south of the border once a year.

AT&T will introduce new bundled roaming options covering Mexico and Canada on Friday, it announced this week.

The U.S. telco said that customers switching to its new Mobile Share Value 15 GB and higher plans will receive unlimited calls, text messaging and use of their data allowance in Mexico and between Mexico and the U.S.

Meanwhile, also from Friday, new and existing customers with an AT&T Unlimited Plan can use voice, messaging and data across Canada, the U.S. and Mexico by activating the AT&T Roam North America and Roam North America Data features on smartphones and tablets respectively.

"Around 20% of our postpaid base travels to Mexico or Canada once per year," noted David Christopher, chief marketing officer at AT&T Entertainment Group, in a statement.

AT&T has been building its pan-regional presence since it acquired mobile operations in Mexico last year and pledged to create a seamless experience for customers. It is working hard to build up its service in Mexico and, according to Christopher, aims to provide LTE coverage to 100 million people in the country by the end of 2018.

AT&T’s move south of the border triggered a series of pan-regional roaming offers from rival players in its home market and from Mexico’s biggest player America Movil.

AT&T itself introduced its Mexico Roaming Bonus offer as an add-on to its Mobile Share Value plans in November, giving customers free voice, messaging and 1 GB of data to use in Mexico. The latest additions to the plan essentially build on that offer.
