AT&T on Tuesday amended an international calling package to include unlimited calls to Mexico in a move that could be seen as its first step towards creating a single North American service area.

The U.S. operator said customers who use its World Connect Value plan will be able to make as many calls to Mexico, including mobile numbers, as they wish without any additional charge.

The move comes just days after AT&T completed its US$2.5 billion acquisition of Mexican mobile operator Iusacell.

It immediately announced the appointment of a new CEO for Iusacell in veteran AT&T executive Thaddeus Arroyo, who will oversee the integration of the Mexican company. Ultimately, AT&T aims to create a single service provider covering 400 million consumers and businesses in the U.S. and Mexico, providing a consistent customer experience on a single network.

"Mexico is the most frequently dialled country among our wireless customers, and now they can call as much as they want with our enhanced World Connect Value package," said David Christopher, chief marketing officer at AT&T Mobility, in a statement.

The plan costs $5 per month. In addition to offering unlimited calls to Mexico, it also provides lower rates for calls between the U.S. and 225-plus countries.
