AT&T has revealed plans to enable mobile customers to use the same phone number for all of their connected devices.
Called NumberSync, the service operates in the U.S. telco’s network, so it does not depend on a local connection between devices – such as Bluetooth or WiFi, for instance – in order to work.
"Your devices don’t need to be near each other and NumberSync will work even if your primary phone is turned off or disconnected from the network," said David Christopher, AT&T’s chief marketing officer, in a blog post on Wednesday.
It means that if a subscriber leaves the house with their cellular-enabled tablet, but forgets their smartphone, they are still contactable via their tablet on the same number.
Christopher did not disclose when NumberSync will launch, only that it expects to offer it "on our first devi ce fairly soon" with additional devices being made available over the Christmas period.
"We’re taking a standards-based, network approach that will make connecting a wide variety of devices easier to give you a better user experience," Christopher continued. "We’ll share more information on details soon, so stay tuned for updates."
