Contactless Mobile app will now be available to all Barclays UK credit and debt card customers from June.

Barclays is rolling out its own contactless payment service from June that will allow all Barclays customers with an eligible NFC-enabled Android phone to make payments via 400,000 contactless locations in the UK and across the London transport network.

The service is called Contactless Mobile, and is part of an updated version of the Barclays mobile banking app. The service has been available to Barclaycard credit card customers since January, but will be accessible to all credit and debit card customers when the latest update is rolled out in June. It enables customers to use their smartphones to make payments via 400,000 contactless locations in the UK and across the London transport network.

With the launch, the bank is also effectively shunning Android pay – the contactless payments service launched by Google to compete directly with Apple Pay and expected to arrive in the UK this year.

A spokesperson for Barclays confirmed that the bank has no plans at this stage to participate in Android Pay. The bank has signed up with Apple Pay, but the Android open source platform has enabled it to design its own service for Android smartphones.

To use the service, Barclays customers need to have a compatible NFC-enabled phone running Android Kit Kat or later and an eligible Barclays debit card or Barclaycard. All cards will automatically appear, and can be selected for payment as required.

For payments up to up to £30, the user only has to touch the phone on the contactless reader. For payments between £30 and £100, when the user touches their phone on the contactless reader, they will be asked to enter the card’s normal PIN into their phone keypad and touch their phone on the contactless reader to complete the payment.

Ashok Vaswani, CEO of Barclays UK, said: “Giving customers the choice about how to make everyday payments while making it really easy for people to use our services is why we’ve designed this new contactless payment functionality which will sit at the heart of our already popular mobile banking app. It’s all there, in one place, ready to go with no need to enter card details, delivering a brilliant experience in an instant.”
