Former CEO of Alcatel-Lucent, BT to serve four-year term in non-executive role at U.K. regulator.

Ofcom this week appointed Ben Verwaayen as a non-executive member of the U.K. telco regulator’s board.

Verwaayen served as chief executive of BT between January 2002 and June 2008, joining the U.K. incumbent from U.S. equipment maker Lucent. In October 2008 he returned to his old stomping ground, becoming CEO of Alcatel-Lucent, a position he held until February 2013.

Ofcom has also appointed the former editor-in-chief of the Economist, Bill Emmott as a non-executive board member and chairman of the its content board.

"I am delighted to be welcoming Ben Verwaayen and Bill Emmott to the Ofcom board. They are two high-calibre appointments who bring a wealth of experience, which will greatly benefit Ofcom," said Ofcom chairwoman Patricia Hodgson, in a statement on Thursday.

Verwaayen and Emmott will take up their roles this month and will serve four-year terms.

They replace journalist Tim Gardam and former Cable & Wireless executive Mike McTighe, who are stepping down, each having served two terms.
