Ad-funded Links will also offer free calls, mobile device charging.
BT this week unveiled plans to replace its London phone boxes with high-speed WiFi kiosks.
Called LinkUK, the initiative is the result of a partnership between BT and outdoor digital media specialist Intersection, which launched a similar scheme in New York called LinkNYC.
The kiosks, or Links, as they are called, will be rolled out on major high streets across the capital. Anyone within range of a Link will be able to access free WiFi. They will also offer free landline and mobile phone calls, mobile device charging, as well as local information including maps.
The kiosks will be able to display adverts on two 55-inch screens, which will cover the cost of the services. For that purpose, BT has partnered with outdoor ad company Primesight.
"We’re evolving the phone box to make it relevant in the 21st century by offering people ultrafast WiFi and a range of digital and information services entirely for free. London is one of the greatest cities in the world and it’s entirely fitting that it becomes the first U.K. city to benefit from the Links," said Gerry McQuade, CEO of BT Wholesale and Ventures.
"We will be rolling out many more Links to the other great cities across the U.K. over the coming months as we look to transform the look and functionality of our public payphones," he said.
BT aims to deploy 750 Links in central London and major cities over the next few years.
