German operator brings together group security businesses into new Telekom Security unit, which will launch operations at the start of 2017.

Deutsche Telekom on Tuesday announced that it is in the process of creating a new business unit that will support its plans to expand its security solutions operations.

The German incumbent said the new unit will be known as Telekom Security, with products marketed under the Magenta Security brand name.

The new unit will be formally established on 1 April and will officially launch operations on 1 January 2017. However, Deutsche Telekom will unveil its first products under the new unit in the consumer, business and corporate sectors in March this year. These will include a cloud-based fixed network security solution, a smartphone product and a plug-and-play network encryption solution for SMEs.

"The central idea behind all of these solutions is that we need to make security easy, i.e. easy to use and easy to understand," said Ferri Abolhassan, managing director of T-Systems’ IT division and the man responsible for creating the new unit.

All products will be tested with ease of use in mind, Abolhassan said. "In short, we want to make life a little easier for our customers."

Telekom Security will bring together Deustche Telekom’s existing security operations from different businesses across the group. This way, the telco aims to boost its efficiency and effectiveness in the cyber-security space, as well as strengthening its internal security.

Using figures from analyst firm Experton, Deutsche Telekom said it expects the German market for security solutions to grow by 7% this year.

"We want to outperform the market with our new products and increase our market share," said Abolhassan. "With our many years of experience in internal security, and in sales, we already have everything on board that we need in order to be even more successful," he said. "Now we’re taking these things into the market in a big way."
