KPN rolling out smart home services based on German incumbent’s QIVICON platform.
Deutsche Telekom revealed on Monday that KPN is the first telco partner rolling out smart home services underpinned by its QIVICON platform.
Launched in 2013, QIVICON is a hub that connects compatible smart devices in the home, such as alarms, thermostats, plug sockets, and light switches, among others, to apps that the customer can use to control them.
40 brands have products that use the platform, including Philips, Miele, Samsung, Huawei and Sonos.
Deutsche Telekom revealed on Monday that smart home service trials conducted by KPN in 2015 used QIVICON, and that the Dutch incumbent began rolling it out commercially earlier this year.
"We are pleased to welcome KPN as the first international telecoms operator to join our connected home ecosystem," said Christian von Reventlow, Deutsche Telekom’s chief product and innovation officer, in a statement.
He said the partnership is part of Deutsche Telekom’s plan to expand its smart home presence across Europe.
"We are actively engaging with potential partners from large corporates to innovative start-ups, as our platform supports a number of different business models where companies can develop new solutions or services, extend existing products, and adapt to new market potential and target groups," he said.
In addition to KPN, Austrian utility Eww last year also launched a QIVICON-based smart home service.
"The success of our platform in Germany and Austria, and now this roll out in the Netherlands will help us to take a lead in the connected home market, as we target other European countries," Reventlow said.
