Huawei, ZTE help Sri Lankan telcos reach 1 Gbps.
Sri Lankan operators Dialog Axiata and Mobitel late last week became the latest to test LTE-Advanced Pro.
In separate statements, the telcos said they reached connection speeds in excess of 1 Gbps. Dialog said its test was carried out on its LTE network in partnership with Huawei, while Mobitel conducted a test in its lab using equipment supplied by Huawei and its rival ZTE.
"Having successfully tested the 4.5G LTE-Advanced Pro technology…Mobitel is looking forward to commercially deploy[ing] the 4.5G services to the nation for further strengthening the evolving ICT industry," Mobitel announced on Friday, without actually saying when that might happen.
Axiata also kept quiet about when it might roll out LTE-A Pro, but said the test establishes "a solid foundation for the future evolution of the nation’s 4G services to a technology generation well ahead of neighbouring markets."
The announcements came a week after Denmark’s TDC carried out a 1-Gbps LTE-A Pro test of its own. The incumbent aims to commercially roll it out in 2017.
Meanwhile, South Korea’s SK Telecom recently revealed plans to launch LTE-A Pro this month with a view to covering 90% of the population by 2019.
Swisscom and Telia’s Norwegian unit Netcom are also among the telcos to have tested the technology.
