U.K. handset retailer Dixons Carphone on Thursday unveiled plans to launch a mobile virtual network operator (MVNO) that offers low-cost 4G services.

Called iD, the service is due to go live on 3UK’s network in May. At launch, the company will offer Samsung’s mid-range Galaxy A3 on a 12-month plan that comes will 300 minutes, 5,000 texts, and 1 GB of data per month.

"People want greater flexibility from their plans and are fed up with the ‘one size fits all’ approach," said Graham Stapleton, U.K. CEO of Carphone Warehouse, in a statement. "A recent study by Which? found that overspend on mobile phone charges in the U.K. amounts to £5.42 billion each year – showing just how many people aren’t on the right plan for them."

Details are scant at the moment, but iD claims it will address these issues by giving customers flexible contracts and free data roaming as well as value-for-money 4G.

"We know that there are lots more customer issues and frustrations with existing mobile plans that we’re eager to tackle," Stapleton continued. "We want this network to be focused on the individual and we will continue to listen to customers over the coming months, asking them to help develop and evolve iD."

Customers will be able to sign up to iD from the company’s Carphone Warehouse, Currys and PC World stores, as well as online.
