Certification and pre-integration are measures that can be taken now.

The current lack of standards around NFV and SDN should not stop telcos from virtualising their networks.

"The reality is that we are still months or years away from getting an NFV standard in place and in that time we cannot sit and wait," said Kevin Paige, chief information and technology officer at Manx Telecom, during a panel session at Total Telecom Congress in London on Tuesday.

Rather, certification and pre-integration are measures that can be taken now that "really help, as it brings the system in line," giving you a "set of apps you can develop further.”

A question about standardised APIs sparked similar comments, with Dan Warren, director of group architecture at Capita, going as far as to say there is reluctance among certain industry players for standards to be developed.

"Every time you buy a platform it comes at a reasonable price but with a professional services contract, which tries to take away the pain of doing it on your own," he explained.

This is because you need specialists to help you when APIs haven’t been standardised, he said. "As a result, there is a vested interest in slowing standardisation down to extend the opportunity for professional services contracts.”
