Mobile operator’s chief commercial officer Marc Allera to take on top job following 12.5bn takeover.
EE announced on Monday that CEO Olaf Swantee will step down after BT completes its £12.5 billion acquisition of the mobile operator.
Once the deal closes, EE will become a new division within BT headed up by Marc Allera, who currently serves as EE’s chief commercial officer.
"To leave EE is probably the hardest decision of my career, but I feel the time is right for me to handover for the next exciting chapter of EE’s incredible journey. I wish Marc all the success for the future," said Swantee, in a statement.
BT agreed to acquire EE in February 2015, and the U.K.’s competition watchdog, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA), gave its preliminary backing to the takeover in late October.
The deal is still subject to formal CMA approval; as a result, no firm date has been set for its completion. However, the transaction is expected to close by March.
"I am immensely proud of the past four-and-a-half years, creating, launching and growing EE to the exciting business it is today. It has been a period of great success, and I’d like to thank all of our employees for the incredibly hard work and support they have shown to me, as well as the business, to help achieve this," Swantee said.
Swantee said he is leaving to "pursue new opportunities", but did not elaborate; however, a senior role at former employer and EE shareholder Orange would not come as much of a surprise.
