EE on Friday bolstered its TV service by expanding the range of premium TV channels on offer.

The U.K. telco has done a deal with TVPlayer, a Web-based streaming service that lets people watch basic TV channels online for free with the option to pay a monthly fee to watch premium content from TVPlayer’s partners. These partners include UKTV and Sony, among others.

Friday’s agreement means that for £4.99 per month on a rolling monthly contract, EE TV subscribers can access TVPlayer’s 25 premium channels – including the Sony Movie channel, Discovery, Natio nal Geographic, History, Gold, and British Eurosport, among others (see below for a full list) – via the TVPlayer Plus app available on the on-demand menu of their EE TV service.

"EE TV customers have always loved being able to pick and choose premium channels without the commitment of a fixed contract or a hefty monthly fee," said Simeon Bird, director of broadband and TV at EE, in a statement.

"These 25 new channels offer something for everyone, whether you like sport, documentaries, lifestyle shows, or want to keep the family entertained," he said.

Friday’s announcement serves to illustrate the growing importance of premium content in the battle for the living room.

When it launched EE TV in October 2014, the telco placed the emphasis firmly on the high-end features of its set-top-box (STB) rather than the range of channels.

Since then though, EE has bolstered the premium content it offers by adding more streaming services to its on-demand catalogue, including most notably Sky’s Now TV streaming service, which EE added in March.
