Facebook on Thursday partnered with car-hailing service Uber to allow members to request a car from within its Messenger app.
Users simply download the latest version of Facebook Messenger, then from within a conversation access the ‘more’ menu and select ‘transportation’, explained Facebook product manager Seth Rosenberg, in a statement on Wednesday.
Once hailed, the user can receive updates from their driver and notify friends that they have requested a car.
"With the ability to request, track and pay for a ride in Messenger, we’re making transportation as simple as sending a message," Rosenberg said. "With everything in one place, you can seamlessly keep track of your ride and payment history."
The new feature is currently in testing and will be available to select users in areas where Uber operates in the U.S.
"More countries and other transportation partners will be available soon," Rosenberg said.
For a limited time, users will get their first Uber ride free, up to a value of US$20. All they need to do is link their Uber account to Messenger, or set up a new Uber account from within the Messenger app.
