French broadband provider Free claimed a world first on Tuesday with the launch of an Android TV set-top-box (STB) that supports ultra-high definition 4K TV.
Called the Freebox mini 4K, it consists of two units: a server and a TV player. The server incorporates modems that can connect to ADSL2+, VDSL and fibre networks, as well as a WiFi router and a femtocell.
Meanwhile the player comes with Android TV, as well as a TV tuner with 200 channels to choose from. It also plugs into the server, giving customers access to online video streaming services.
Of course, to benefit from its 4K capability, custo mers will need a compatible TV, and access to 4K content. Ultra-high definition (UHD) is so called because its 3840×2160 pixel resolution is four times greater than standard HD.
It also comes with a Bluetooth remote that can be controlled with voice commands.
The Freebox mini 4K is available from Tuesday to customers covered by Free’s unbundled copper and fibre networks for €29.99 per month. It replaces the telco’s standard HD STB and server combination, the Freebox Crystal.
