HTC swung to a net profit in the first quarter of 2015, according to unaudited financial results published on Tuesday.
In the three months ended 31 March, the smartphone maker generated revenue of 41.5 billion Taiwanese dollars (€1.2 billion), up 34.5% from NT$33.1 billion in Q1 2013.
HTC also posted a slim operating profit of NT$20 million (around €600,000), compared to a year earlier operating loss of NT$2.1 billion. The company’s net profit after tax came in at NT$360 million, up from a loss of NT$1.9 billion, which indicates that HTC’s bottom line was not necessarily driven by handset sales.
Tuesday’s numbers are the second set of encouraging results HTC has reported this year. In early February, the company reported revenue of NT$47.9 billion for the fourth quarter of 2014, its first year-on-year revenue growth for three years.
HTC co-founder Cher Wang, who took on the CEO role on 20 March, will doubtless hope to maintain the positive momentum.
At this year’s Mobile World Congress, the company launched the HTC One M9, the l atest edition of its flagship smartphone, and its first fitness tracker. The M9 went on sale in select markets in late March, so all eyes will be on HTC’s second quarter numbers to see how well, or otherwise, the device has been received.
