Chinese vendor shipped 108 million smartphones in 2015.

Huawei this week revealed that revenues at its Consumer Business Group (CBG), which makes smartphones, wearables, and related devices, surged to US$20 billion in 2015, up 70% on 2014.

The Chinese vendor said smartphone shipments reached 108 million worldwide last year, up from 75 million in 2014.

According to figures from GfK, Huawei’s smartphone market share stood at 9.7% at the end of September, good enough for third place behind Apple, which claimed 11.8% of the market. Market leader Samsung’s market share stood at 28.3%.

"Huawei’s outstanding business performance can be attributed to its tremendous investment in innovation and R&D. Huawei has established 16 research laboratories around the world, including locations in China, Germany, Sweden, Russia and India," said Huawei, in a statement late on Tuesday. "Huawei has applied its self-developed innovation to its latest products, enabling people to have amazing experiences using the devices."

The company will hope the latest addition to its smartphone portfolio, launched at CES in Las Vegas on Tuesday, helps Huawei CBG to continue on its upward trajectory.

Running on Android Marshmallow, the Mate 8 is pitched as a productivity-driven smartphone. Its fast-charging feature delivers a day’s worth of power in 30 minutes, while Huawei’s EMUI 4.0 user interface comes with a split-screen mode to improve multi-tasking.

It is also equipped with a speaker phone designed to provide crisp call quality at up to three metres, making it easier to conduct conference calls.

The Mate 8 is also a dual-SIM smartphone that supports nine 3G bands and 18 4G bands, which Huawei claims makes it suitable for business travel.

The Mate 8 will start at €599 for the 32 GB version, while the 64 GB edition will cost €699.
