KPN has agreed to acquire cloud services provider IS Group, a deal that should help the Dutch incumbent address the SME market.

Also based in the Netherlands, IS Group offers hosting, virtual desktop, networking and managed services to corporate customers on a subscription basis. It employs 130 full time staff and in 2014 turned over €25 million.

In a statement this week, KPN said IS Group’s assets, in particular its virtual desktop solution for SMEs, will expand the telco’s managed hosting capabilities.

"Our business customers are increasingly asking for cloud-based services to support their growth," said KPN’s chief commercial officer Frank van der Post, in a statement.

"Together with IS Group we will be better able to service our customers in their transition to the cloud, with solutions that increase efficiency and flexibility, while allowing for rapid scalability," he said.

The works councils of both KPN and IS Group have come out in favour of the deal, KPN said. Financial terms were not disclosed.
