Millicom on Wednesday announced the appointment of Cynthia Gordon as the new CEO of its Africa business.

Gordon will take charge of the telco’s operations in six African markets – Tanzania, Ghana, DRC, Senegal, Rwanda and Chad – and will lead a newly created Africa executive committee that will drive Millicom’s business in the region.

She joins the emerging markets-focused telc o from Ooredoo, where she served as chief commercial officer for three and a half years. Prior to joining Ooredoo in January 2012, Gordon was at Orange, where she held a variety of roles, including VP of partnerships and emerging markets. In between stints at Orange she also spent two years as chief commercial officer and global brand chief at Russia’s MTS.

"Under Cynthia’s leadership, the Africa division will be optimised to focus on delivering organic growth in the region," said Millicom CEO Mauricio Ramos.

"She knows the telecoms industry inside-out, and will bring her commercial acumen to support the delivery of our strategy to build and grow our digital services in Africa while creating value for our shareholders," he added.

Gordon herself said she is joining Millicom at a "transformative time for the digital and telecommunications space in Africa."

Millicom is focused on bringing mobile connectivity, digital lifestyle services, mobile financial services and business offerings to the continent, she said.
