Mauricio Ramos will become Millicom’s new chief executive officer next month.
He joins the emerging market-focused operator from Liberty Global where he spent the last 14 years, most recently serving as president of the U.S. cableco’s Latin American division. He has also held leadership roles as Liberty Global’s VTR unit in Chile and its Puerto Rican operations.
"He has successfully developed both mobile and broadband businesses in Latin America, delivering solid operational improvement and outstanding financial results," Millicom said, in a statement earlier this week.
Ramos, a Colombian national, replaces Hans-Holger Albrecht who handed in his notice in December and was later named as the new chief executive of music streaming service Deezer. To fill the void, Millicom’s chief financial officer Tim Pennington has been acting CEO for the past few months.
"[Ramos] is a talented and experienced world-class professional, with a deep understanding of the digital consumer," Cristina Stenbeck, chairman of the Millicom board, said.
"He wi ll bring the vision, leadership and execution capability necessary to further develop our strong Tigo franchise and create long term shareholder value," she added.
Meanwhile, Ramos said he is looking forward to taking up his new role. He aims "to further develop an outstanding company, with very promising opportunities."
Luxembourg-headquartered Millicom provides mobile, cable and satellite services to 56 million customers across 14 markets in Latin America and Africa.
