Ahmad Farroukh, chief executive officer of MTN’s South African business, has tendered his resignation, the company announced on Monday.
The decision was "unavoidable due to personal and family reasons," MTN group CEO Sifiso Dabengwa said, in a statement. Farroukh’s resignation is effective as of the end of the month.
The move comes at a difficult time for MTN, which is in the seventh week of an employee strike, Reuters pointed out. However, MTN made no mention of that in its announcement.
"On behalf of the MTN leadership, we thank Ahmad for his contribution and wish him success with his future endeavours," Dabengwa said.
Farroukh joined MTN in 2006 when the telco group acquired Lebanese telecoms holding company Investcom for $5.5 billion. His previous roles saw him serve as CEO of MTN Nigeria and hold a similar role at MTN in Ghana.
MTN is working on appointing his replacement.
"A successor to Farroukh will be announced as soon as the new appointment is finalised,&quo t; MTN said.
