Nokia on Friday got the green light from the European Commission for its €15.6 billion acquisition of rival player Alcatel-Lucent.

"The proposed transaction was notified to the European Commission on 19 June 2015 and was cleared today without conditions following a Phase 1 review," Nokia said, in a statement.

The Finnish vendor added that EU approval follows regulatory clearances in Serbia and Brazil, and the expiration of the antitrust review period in the U.S., Nokia said.

Other markets have already given the go-ahead, while some are yet to do so.

"Both companies will continue to cooperate with the remaining authorities to close their reviews as quickly as possible," Nokia said.

It added that its own shareholders have still to approve the deal.

It expects it to close in the first half of next year.
