Finnish vendor snaps up start-up that helps cablecos migrate to all-IP architecture.
Nokia on Friday strengthened its position in the cable infrastructure market with the acquisition of Gainspeed.
Silicon Valley-based Gainspeed’s flagship offering is its Virtual Converged Cable Access Platform (CCAP), which enables cable operators to migrate from analogue headends to digital, all-IP infrastructure, saving on power, space and cost, and increasing network capacity.
"Cable is one of the fastest-growing areas in our fixed networks business, and we are committed to delivering a complete solution set to cable operators," said Federico Guillen, president of Nokia’s fixed networks business group, in a statement.
"Gainspeed’s virtual CCAP perfectly complements our leading fibre access solutions for cable MSOs," he said.
Privately-held Gainspeed was founded in 2012; it employs approximately 70 people.
The deal is expected to close in the third quarter, subject to customary closing conditions.
Financial terms were not disclosed.
