NTT DoCoMo and GE Energy Japan have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) that will see the companies jointly develop a new Internet of Things (IoT) offering.

Under the partnership, DoCoMo’s embedded communications module will be used in tandem with GE’s industrial wireless router to enable customers to collect and analyse real-time operational data from industrial equipment.

Information such as temperature and vibration data can be sent to the cloud and used for predictive diagnostics tools that can prevent equipment failure and extend its life.

DoCoMo’s partnership with GE is part of the Japanese operator’s ‘+d’ (pronounced ‘plus D’) initiative to extend its reach into new ecosystems via collaborative relationships.

"By integrating the technologies of GE and DoCoMo and continually expanding to a wider range of fields, both companies will work together to provide their customers with IoT solutions that offer new kinds of value," said DoCoMo, in a statement on Wednesday.
