Orange is exiting Armenia, having agreed to sell its mobile operation in the country to ISP Ucom.

The operator revealed last month that it was in exclusive talks with Ucom and late on Friday the pair announced that they had agreed a deal.

The value of the deal was not disclosed.

"This agreement will enable the creation of a strong convergent Armenian player, capable of offering its customers a broad range of fixed and mobile services," Orange said in a statement.

Orange became Armenia’s third mobile operator in 2009, launching services in competition with incumbe nt ArmenTel and MTS’ VivaCell. By the end of last year Orange Armenia had amassed a customer base of 630,000 in a country with a population of around 3 million.

In July Orange commented that it does not have the scale it needs to invest in the provision of converged services in Armenia.

Merging with Ucom helps to solve that problem though.

Ucom is building out a fibre network in Armenia and is strongly pushing its triple-play service, which includes fixed telephony, broadband Internet and IPTV.

The deal also fits with Orange’s strategy of concentrating its efforts on markets in which it is one of the top two players in market share terms.
