Executive held top job at Belgian incumbent for 10 years.

Didier Bellens, the former CEO of Belgian incumbent Proximus, has died aged 60.

Bellens held the top job at Proximus, which was known as Belgacom until last year, between February 2003 and November 2013. He joined from broadcaster RTL Group, part of Germany’s Bertelsmann. He succeeded John Goosens, who died of a heart attack in November 2002.

"Under his leadership Belgacom got listed on the stock exchange, and the company also launched digital TV in Belgium," said Proximus, in a statement on Sunday.

Bellens’ tenure came to an ignominious end: he was fired for critical comments about the Belgian government, which owns more than 50% of Proximus.

The telco appointed company insider Dominique Leroy in January 2014 for a six-year term.

"In these difficult moments the thoughts of the board, executive committee and employees of Proximus go to his family," Proximus said.
