LPWA specialist aims to cover capital by end of 2016; eyes nationwide coverage thereafter.
Sigfox this week announced it has begun deploying its Internet of Things (IoT) network in Mexico.
The network is being rolled out by WND, Sigfox’s network partner for Latin America, and IoTNet Mexico, a subsidiary of local energy services firm Nxtview and the exclusive Sigfox network operator (SNO) in Mexico once the network goes live.
"As part of a group that is providing utility services to major Mexican companies and is deploying the first metering-as-a-service in the country, we made an extensive comparison of the available LPWA (low-power wide-area) and cellular technologies and concluded Sigfox was superior in simplicity, choice of hardware vendors and ecosystem support," said Daniel Guevara, CEO of IotNet Mexico, in a statement on Tuesday.
"But more than that, we chose them for their disruptive business model and their versatile global ecosystem that helps SNOs and their customers quickly implement the IoT," he added.
The companies are commencing the rollout in Mexico City; they expect to complete city-wide coverage by the end of this year and will extend service availability nationwide shortly thereafter.
Mexico becomes the 21st market in Sigfox’s rapidly-growing footprint. Together with its network in Brazil, deployment of which started in April, Sigfox will soon address 53% of Latin America’s territory and 56% of its population.
"With the addition of Mexico, Sigfox and its network operator partners are currently deploying the Sigfox network in countries totalling one billion people, with one third of this population under effective coverage today," said Rodolphe Baronnet-Frugès, executive vice president, networks and operators, at Sigfox.
