Narrow-band network expected to go live by end of 2017.

SigFox will deploy a nationwide Internet of Things (IoT) network in Germany, it announced on Thursday.

The France-based company plans to have the network fully up and running before the end of 2017, at which point Germany will become the 14th country in its footprint.

"SigFox is building a strong ecosystem of partners across the IoT value chain and Germany has many market-leading companies whose influence extends worldwide," said Stuart Lodge, executive vice president for global sales and partners at SigFox, in a statement.

SigFox’s IoT networks use unlicensed spectrum in the ISM (industrial, scientific and medical) band, coexisting with other frequency users.

Its technology is designed to provide low-power, narrowband, wide area networking, which is suitable for connecting large numbers of devices.

Once SigFox has deployed its infrastructure, it signs up SigFox network operators (SNOs), who sell connectivity services that run on the network.

SigFox said it is already working with local silicon vendors, product manufacturers and distribution partners in Germany in a bid to drive IoT development and ensure that its technology is compatible with a broad range of devices and services.

"Germany is a very important market for SigFox and our commitment to deploy a national network reflects this," Lodge said.
