Operators aim to deliver consistent quality of service, roaming experience between next-gen networks in Korea, Germany.

SK Telecom, Deutsche Telekom and Ericsson on Thursday revealed plans to carry out a transcontinental trial of prospective 5G networks.

The three companies will deploy trial networks in South Korea and Germany that support emerging technology including network functions virtualisation (NFV), network slicing, and what SK Telecom calls software-defined telecommunications infrastructure (SDTI) – where the processing, memory, and storage components of a server are separated into individual modules to enable greater customisation of data centre hardware.

SK Telecom, Deutsche Telekom and Ericsson have also agreed to cooperate on use case development, ecosystem development, global marketing, and standardisation.

"The aim of this world’s first transcontinental trial is to provide optimised end-user experiences by providing consistent quality of services and roaming experiences for advanced 5G use cases with enhanced global reach," said SK Telecom, in a statement.

According to an Ovum prediction earlier this week, global 5G subscriptions are expected to reach 24 million by 2021, with Asia-Pacific accounting for 40% of that total and Europe accounting for 10%.
