South Korean operator says recently-formed industry group will play ‘pivotal role’ in creating new business opportunities.
SK Telecom this week became the latest telco after Vodafone to join the recently-established 5G Automotive Association (5GAA).
The industry group was established in late September by German car makers Audi, BMW and Daimler, as well as telco vendors Ericsson, Huawei and Nokia, and chip makers Intel and Qualcomm.
Its mission is to develop, test and promote communications solutions that will enable a range of connected vehicle services, including driverless cars.
In October, Vodafone became the first telco to join the 5GAA, signing up as a platinum member. Luke Ibbetson, Voda’s head of R&D and technology strategy, joined the industry group’s board.
SK Telecom’s joining will "contribute to the definition and development of next-generation connected mobility solutions," said the 5GAA’s director general Dino Flore, in a statement on Sunday.
"5G will enable the automotive industry to create new and innovative values through services including augmented autonomous driving, worry-free car management and rich in-car services," added Alex Jinsung Choi, CTO and head of SK Telecom’s corporate R&D centre.
He believes the 5GAA will "play a pivotal role" in "creating new business opportunities for both the mobile telecommunications and automotive industries," he said.
