Operator’s T map for Car combines multiple location-tracking technologies to improve accuracy.

SK Telecom on Thursday launched a new app designed to enhance the performance of in-car navigation systems.

Called ‘T map for Car’, it is based on the operator’s mobile navigation app ‘T map’, which uses satellites and base stations to determine location. When plugged into a car’s infotainment system, the app taps the car’s dead reckoning systems, which calculate position based on measurements such as speed, distance travelled, and orientation, and so-on. The result is a navigation system that hopefully works well even when the car is in a tunnel or surrounded on all sides by glass-panelled skyscrapers.

"SK Telecom’s T map for Car will deliver enhanced customer convenience and new value in the area of connected car services by combining the most popular mobile navigation service T map with in-vehicle navigation systems," said Lee Hae-yeol, head of SK Telecom’s T Map division, in a statement.

SK Telecom said Kia will support T map for Car on its new Optima saloon from July, as will Jaguar on its F-Pace SUV from September.

T map for Car is designed to work with multiple connected car interfaces. For instance, the Kia Optima uses the open MirrorLink standard developed by the Car Connectivity Consortium, while Jaguar uses Jaguar Land Rover’s proprietary InControl Apps platform.

T map for Car is available free of charge from One Store, the unified Android app store that brings together apps from SK Telecom with those from rival operators KT and Uplus, as well as Korean ISP Naver.
