Korean operator to plough over 75 million over next two years to boost its Internet of Things business.

SK Telecom on Wednesday announced plans to deploy a nationwide low-power, wide-area network (LPWAN) as part of a broader Internet of Things (IoT) strategy.

The South Korean operator is also developing its own IoT modules that can be embedded in devices, and is upgrading its ThingPlug IoT platform. In all, it expects to spend 100 billion won (€75.58 million) on its IoT strategy over the next two years.

"Through our IoT strategy that encompasses network, platform and devices, SK Telecom will lead the growth of the IoT industry," said Lee Hyung-hee, chief operating officer of SK Telecom, in a statement. "Our forward-looking efforts will also contribute to the creation of an enriched IoT ecosystem where developers and startups/SMEs can easily build diverse IoT services that can bring new and differentiated value for customers."

SK Telecom is a backer of the LoRa Alliance’s LPWAN technology, which is designed to support the transmission of small volumes of data over long distances, using little power.

Alongside its LPWAN deployment, SK Telecom will also establish an IoT control centre with responsibility for monitoring the network’s status and all the devices connected to it.

The control centre will also be tasked with ensuring that everything connected to the network has taken appropriate security measures.
