Operator says it will continue to support service as long as people still use it.

Contrary to an earlier report, SK Telecom has no plans to shut down Joyn, even though its rivals KT Corp and LG Uplus have withdrawn the service.

A spokesman for the operator said in an email Total Telecom that KT Corp and LG Uplus pulled the plug on Joyn last Friday, and will completely close the service by the end of February.

However, "SK Telecom has no plans to shut the service down so long as it still has subscribers," the spokesman said.

This contradicts a statement earlier this week from LG Uplus that claimed all three of South Korea’s MNOs were shutting Joyn down.

SK Telecom acknowledged that one of Joyn’s most important features is that users can reach one another regardless of which mobile network they are on, provided their operator supports it.

With just SK Telecom offering Joyn, its reach and appeal are severely limited.

"SK Telecom will figure out what to do in the future," the spokesman said.

SK Telecom launched Joyn in late 2012, reaching the 1 million user mark in just 50 days.
