Spark New Zealand’s low-cost unit offers 60 GB for NZ$55 per month.

Spark New Zealand’s low-cost mobile brand Skinny Mobile this week launched a 4G-based fixed-wireless broadband service.

Called Skinny Broadband, the service costs NZ$55 (€33) per month for 60 GB of data, plus NZ$199 up front for a Huawei fixed-wireless modem. For a limited time, customers will get the first month’s service for free.

Before they sign up to the service, prospective customers need to ensure they live somewhere covered by parent company Spark’s 4G network.

"We know Kiwis are looking for lower cost, hassle-free broadband options so we’re excited to launch Skinny Broadband, which offers our customers New Zealand’s best broadband prices," said Ross Parker, general manager of Skinny Mobile, in a statement published on local news outlet Scoop’s Website on Tuesday.

Indeed, by comparison, Spark New Zealand’s fixed broadband service starts at NZ$70 per month for naked ADSL – with usage capped at 80 GB per month – rising to NZ$140 for an unlimited 200 Mbps fibre connection.

Vodafone New Zealand’s ADSL service also starts at NZ$70 per month for 80 GB, while a 30 Mbps unlimited fibre service costs NZ$90 per month.

"We’re committed to being the best value player in the broadband market and offering the same super low prices and great service that Skinny is known for," Parker said.
