Triple-play provider to offer ultra HD sports, movie, documentary, entertainment content from 13 August.
Sky UK on Thursday revealed plans to offer a broad range of ultra high-definition (UHD) content from 13 August.
The triple-play provider has lined up sports content including live Premier League football and every race of next season’s Formula 1 championship. It will also offer 70 movies in UHD; it will make a further 30 UHD films available to rent from its Sky Store service. There will be a range of popular documentaries, dramas and comedy shows available too.
To watch in UHD, also known as 4K, customers must be signed up to the high-end Sky Q Silver bundle, which starts at £54 per month. Customers must also make sure they own a UHD TV, of course.
"With the introduction of an unrivalled line-up of ultra HD TV, the [Sky Q] service is going to get even better, truly enhancing customers’ viewing experience," said Luke Bradley-Jones, director of TV and content products at Sky, in a statement.
Eligible customers will be able to watch UHD content at no extra cost.
"The announcement is well-timed with Monday’s announcement from EE making BT Sport available to selected mobile customers," noted Paolo Pescatore, director of multiplay and media at CCS Insight. "But, more importantly, it comes when all providers will start to heavily promote their respective multi-play bundles ahead of the new Premier League football season."
What’s more, with Sky planning to launch an MVNO service in the U.K. on O2’s network, Vodafone expected to roll out a TV service, and Virgin Media preparing a new set-top-box, "it’s going to be a very busy second half of the year," he said.
