Head of domestic business Ken Miyauchi to become COO and president of international business.

Softbank on Wednesday appointed Ken Miyauchi as chief operating officer and president of its international business, following the sudden departure of Nikesh Arora.

Miyauchi has been with Softbank for more than 30 years, and became director of Softbank’s domestic operations when the company effectively split into two distinct business groups in March.

Arora was head of the international business, which includes U.S. telco Sprint, plus stakes in numerous online companies and start-ups, and was in line to succeed Softbank founder and group CEO Masayoshi Son.

However, Arora resigned on Tuesday after Son revealed that rather than stepping down in the near future, he will stay on for the next five-10 years.

"This is not a time frame for me to keep Nikesh waiting for the top job," Son said.

Softbank has yet to reveal who, if anyone, will take charge of its domestic business in light of Miyauchi’s new role.
