Less than a week after Sprint dangled free mobile service in front of DirecTV customers in a bid to swipe them from under AT&T’s nose, the operator has upped the ante by offering prospective customers a choice of larger monthly da ta allowances.
There is a catch though: these bigger bundles do not come free.
Last Friday, Sprint announced that any DirecTV customer that switches to a Sprint mobile service is eligible for free voice, SMS and 2 GB of data per month for a year.
"DirecTV customers switching to Sprint told us they want additional data options," said Kevin Crull, chief marketing officer at Sprint, in a statement on Thursday. "We heard them loud and clear and are giving them what they want – the ability to add more data to the DirecTV offer."
As such, customers now have the option to pay $10 per month for 4GB of data, or $20 per month for 6GB of data.
Customers who have already signed up for the free 2GB per month offer can call Sprint’s customer care line and switch to a bigger bundle.
The offer, which expires on 30 September, was launched as an ironic ‘celebration’ of rival AT&T’s acquisition of DirecTV, which closed in July.
According to AT&T, there are approximately 15 million DirecTV customers who are not signed up for AT&T’s mobile service, and the telco is keen to change that.
So far it has launched its ‘All in One’ plan, a converged TV and mobile service plan, and it has also offered DirecTV customers $500 worth of incentives to switch to its mobile network.
