Swiss incumbent plans commercial launch early in 2017.

Swisscom this week announced it has successfully tested LTE-Advanced Pro, reaching a peak connection speed of 1 Gbps.

LTE-Advanced Pro is the official designation given to the 3GPP’s LTE Release 13, which includes enhancements to carrier aggregation (CA), and support for LTE-unlicensed (LTE-U) and licence assisted access (LAA).

Swisscom said it carried out the test on its live mobile network in partnership with Ericsson.

"At the beginning of this week, we were able to celebrate a first for Europe by achieving a transfer rate of 1 Gbps, thanks to our close collaboration with Ericsson. This success shows me that Swisscom is on the right path for innovation," said Heinz Herren, CTO and CIO of Swisscom, in a statement on Wednesday.

Swisscom’s LTE-A network is currently capable of supporting a peak connection speed of 300 Mbps in more than 100 locations. The Swiss incumbent plans to begin rolling out LTE-Advanced Pro network in early 2017.

"Swisscom is one of the most innovative mobile providers worldwide," said Martin Bürki, CEO of Ericsson Switzerland. "With Europe’s very first LTE-Advanced Pro transfer of 1 Gbps live over Swisscom’s mobile broadband network, we are highlighting the innovative strength of our close collaboration."
