U.S. mobile operator presents new loyalty programme that rewards customers with shares for referring friends and family.

T-Mobile US has unveiled a new scheme through which it aims to attract and retain its valuable postpaid customers by giving away free shares in the company, up to the value of thousands of dollars per year for some.

The U.S. mobile operator presented its Stock Up programme late on Monday as part of a series of initiatives designed to drive customer loyalty, or, in its own words, to thank its customers.

Certain existing and new T-Mobile US customers will qualify immediately for a single free share, worth in excess of US$40 at current trading prices, which they will be able to keep or divest as they choose. Eligible customers include the primary contacts on postpaid consumer smartphone accounts and new postpaid smartphone customers who sign up to the telco’s Simple Choice plan.

The operator is also offering free shares to customers who successfully refer others to T-Mobile.

Postpaid customers who refer a friend or family member to T-Mobile will receive a single share per referral, provided the new customer takes a postpaid plan and ports their phone number from a postpaid account with a rival carrier.

Referrers can earn up to 100 shares per year. "That’s roughly $4,200 in just one year, based on the current share price!" T-Mobile said.

Customers who have had an account with T-Mobile for more than five years will receive two shares per new customer they refer for the remainder of this year.

T-Mobile’s shares peaked at $43.82 following Monday’s announcement.

"For me, there’s no higher praise than hearing a customer say they recommend T-Mobile to family and friends, so we wanted to get this right," said T-Mobile US chief executive John Legere. "And, what better way to thank you than sharing in the future of our company? Now, T-Mobile customers own the place!"

The telco also announced the launch of T-Mobile Tuesdays, a more conventional loyalty programme that gives customers access to rewards such as free pizzas and movie rentals, as well as entering them into prize draws.
