Operator adds 851,000 branded postpaid phone subscribers; profit jumps on spectrum gains.
T-Mobile US’s customer base swelled to almost 70 million by the end of September, following another solid third quarter performance.
The mobile operator added 1.97 million subscribers during the three months to 30 September, driven by branded postpaid phone additions of 851,000. The company also added 684,000 branded prepaid customers, 118,000 branded mobile broadband connections, and 317,000 wholesale customers.
That left T-Mobile with 69.35 million customers at the end of the quarter.
"That’s 14 quarters in a row that T-Mobile has won share from the competition," said T-Mobile US CEO John Legere, in a statement.
T-Mobile’s results were positive on the financial side too.
Total revenue surged 17.8% year-on-year to $9.25 billion (€8.50 billion), while service revenue increased 13.2% to $7.13 billion.
The strong revenue performance comfortably offset increased operating expenses – which rose to $8.26 billion from $7.34 billion a year ago – resulting in operating income rising to $989 million from £513 million.
Net profit surged to $366 million from $138 million in Q3 2015, thanks in part to $122 million worth of after-tax spectrum gains.
"We took share and grew our customer base while producing both financial growth and shareholder value. Most importantly, we are delivering results for both customers and shareholders alike," Legere said.
