Telecom Italia plans to lay off around 3% of its workforce, according to press reports on Thursday.

The Italian incumbent has told labour unions that it will cut 1,700 jobs, Reuters claimed, citing an unnamed union source.

The newswire did not provide any additional details.

The telco had 65,837 staff at the end of the first quarter of this year.

Telecom Italia is working on bringing together its fixed and mobile businesses. Last week it united its retail operations under the TIM brand – formerly solely its mobile brand – although it retains Telecom Italia as its legal identity.

The operator plans to publish its first half results on 7 August.
