Audi, BMW, Daimler team up with Ericsson, Huawei, Nokia, among others to accelerate development of connected vehicle tech.
A group of telco vendors on Tuesday joined forces with the automotive industry to drive the development and uptake of 5G services for connected cars.
Called the 5G Automotive Association (5GAA), its founding members are: car makers Audi, BMW, and Daimler; telco vendors Ericsson, Huawei, and Nokia; and chip makers Intel and Qualcomm.
"The key to success is in cross-industry collaboration. This is why we set up the 5G Automotive Association where experts from all relevant fields are teaming up," said Alfons Pfaller, head of infotainment development at Audi, in a statement.
The group’s aim is to develop, test and promote communications solutions that will enable a variety of connected mobility services, including automated driving.
"The connected car enables us to offer our customers services, both inside and outside the vehicle, which make their daily routine tasks easier, increase comfort and safety and thus create considerable added value. The fundamental basis for this is a reliable and fast connectivity technology whose standards have global validity," said Sajjad Khan, director of Daimler’s digital vehicle and mobility division.
The group’s main activities revolve around the following:
- Defining use cases, technical requirements and implementation strategies.
- Supporting standardisation, regulation, certification, and approval processes.
- Addressing the technical requirements of vehicle-to-everything connectivity, including security, privacy etc.
- Running joint innovation and development projects, conducting pilots and trial deployments.
The 5GAA said it is keen to sign up more automotive and ICT companies including mobile operators, as well as players from other sectors related to road transportation.
"Partnering together with other industry leaders will ensure 5G can support the use cases that will deliver on breakthroughs in safety and services for automated driving, smart city and intelligent transportation solutions around the world," said Doug Davis, EVP and general manager of Intel’s IoT group.
