Bay of Bengal Gateway boosts India’s international connectivity.
A consortium of telcos on Monday launched the Bay of Bengal Gateway (BBG), a 100G cable system linking Oman and Malaysia.
As well as Oman and Malaysia, the 8,100 km network has landing points in the U.A.E. and Sri Lanka, as well as two in India: Chennai and Mumbai. In addition, Singapore has a terrestrial connection to the BBG landing point in Malaysia.
The system improves high-speed Internet connectivity between Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Central and Far-East Asia. It has an initial capacity of 9 Tbps
"This global connectivity brings key international content hubs closer to our customers, delivering a much richer experience as an important part of driving India’s broadband adoption, enabling consumers to shift away from the current high-cost, low-value propositions," said Mathew Oommen, president of Reliance Jio, in a statement.
Reliance Jio is one of six telco members of the BBG consortium, formed in May 2013. The others are Dialog Axiata, Etisalat, Omantel, Telecom Malaysia, and Vodafone.
"Providing robust, reliable, low latency connectivity, BBG strengthens one of the fastest-growing global Internet routes," Reliance Jio said.
