Telecom Italia has struck a deal with Akamai that will enable the Italian incumbent sell a range of content delivery network (CDN) services to corporate clients.

"Akamai’s technology together with Telecom Italia’s platforms and network, gives customers access to more efficient solutions for the use of content," said Simone Battiferri, executive vice president of business at Telecom Italia, in a statement on Tuesday.

"This is much more important in a market like today’s where multimedia services on the Internet are used by a great variety of terminals and devices where speed plays a key role," he said.

The agreement covers CDN, security and Web optimisation services.

It also includes a direct connection between Telecom Italia’s IP network and Akamai’s global platform, enabling Telecom Italia to optimise the delivery of premium Internet content.

Italy represents a "sig nificant opportunity for the adoption of media and cloud services," said Doug Tilford, SVP and general manager of Akamai EMEA.

"The partnership with Telecom Italia is an opportunity for the two companies to bring new and innovative services to market, providing the support and tools necessary to assist businesses inside the country and within the region," he said.
