Telecom Italia has signed an agreement with a number of trade unions that will enable it to make 3,000 redundancies across the company.

The figure covers the 1,700 job losses the Italian operator announced in July, as well as an additional 1,300 cuts linked to the spin-off of its caring services division.

The telco has brokered a deal with unions FISTel-CISL, UILCOM-UIL and UGL Telecomunicazioni with a view to "adjusting the workforce to a cost-sustainable level in certain corporate areas." it announced late on Monday.

The parties will iron out the details of their agreement over the course of the next month, Telecom Italia said.

The job losses will take place over a three-year period.

Earlier this year Telecom Italia mothballed a plan to recruit 4,000 young people over four years pending government legislation.

It had planned to hire the staff under a state scheme designed to help companies with aging workforces to bring in new blood while at the same time protecting existing jobs. However, the initiative has to be implemented under the country’s new Jobs Act.
