Telefonica Business Solutions this week expanded its healthcare partnership with Spanish tech consultancy Indra.

The agreement, which will initially last two years, aims to develop a range of digital hospital solutions, with a particular focus on Latin America, the Spanish incumbent said in a statement on Thursday.

"The concept of the hospital is no longer limited to a physical building," Telefonica said. "By means of this digital transformation it goes beyond walls, enabling new models of doctor-patient relationships based, among other formats, on remote monitoring and virtual visits, thereby extending care to the home and democratising access to health – of particular value in regions such as Latin America."

Telefonica and Indra have been working together since May 2012.

Together they have collaborated on a monitoring service for chronic patients that has been used by healthcare providers all over Spain to keep tabs on people suffering from any number of ailments including, but not limited to heart failure, hypertension, diabetes, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

"The healthcare industry is moving towards a model which guarantees their sustainability," Telefonica said, thanks to "more collaborative and connected systems, with infrastructures which allow greater internal efficiency that provide patients and users with greater accessibility to health services."
