Luca to offer big data as a service, consultancy services, and sell anonymous, aggregated data generated by its networks.

Telefonica this week launched a new business unit tasked with capitalising on big data.

Called Luca, the division will have three main lines of business.

Business Insights will provide enterprises with anonymous, aggregated data collected by Telefonica’s networks.

Synergic Partners, a big data specialist acquired by Telefonica in late 2015, will be responsible for delivering Luca’s analytical and consultancy services.

Finally, Luca will also offer big data as a service (BdaaS), giving enterprises the means to make better use of their own data, using Telefonica’s cloud infrastructure.

"Data is a critical asset for the future of Telefonica and any organisation. With Telefonica’s fundamental promise to always maintain privacy, security and the transparent use of the data we want to help our clients understand its full potential," said Chema Alonso, Telefonica’s chief data officer, in a statement on Thursday.

Luca will be led by Elena Gil, who currently serves as Telefonica’s global big data B2B director.

The Spanish incumbent’s operating companies will be responsible for taking Luca’s range of products and services to market in their respective countries.

"Big data has helped us at Telefonica, and we strongly believe it will help our clients in decision-making, more efficient resource management and in returning the benefits of this wealth of information not only to their clients and direct users, but also to society," Alonso said.
